Description

NAMI Payson, an all-volunteer affiliate in rural Arizona, launched Support on the Trail in 2025—a monthly support group that combines the benefits of nature and exercise with NAMI’s proven support group model. This workshop will provide an overview of the program, share what worked and what didn’t, and offer a practical how-to guide for other affiliates interested in implementing a similar program.

Learning Objectives: List at least three evidence-based benefits of combining outdoor activity with peer support for individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Observable Outcome: Participants will identify and explain these benefits in a group discussion or written reflection. Explain the facilitator’s role and responsibilities during Support on the Trail sessions, including safety, confidentiality, and group management. Observable Outcome: Participants will review a scenario and correctly identify facilitator actions that align with program guidelines. Demonstrate how to introduce the program to potential community partners, referrers, or participants using approved talking points or an elevator pitch. Observable Outcome: Participants will role-play or deliver a 1–2 minute program introduction.
